Simple Summer Energy-Saving Tips to Keep Cool and Cut Costs

May 21, 2025 at 12:49 pm

Summer in New York means longer days, higher temperatures–and often, higher energy bills. But staying cool doesn’t have to cost a fortune. With a few simple changes, you can reduce your energy use and keep more money in your pocket.

Here are some easy ways to save energy (and cash) this summer:

1. Use Programable or Smart Thermostat

Set your thermostat a few degrees higher when you’re not home — around 78°F is ideal for energy savings. Smart thermostats can automatically adjust based on your habits and even help you track your usage.

2. Close Blinds and Curtains During the Day

Up to 30% of unwanted heat comes from your windows. Keep blinds, curtains, or shades closed during the hottest parts of the day to block out the sun and keep your home cooler.

 3. Use Fans Strategically

Ceiling fans and box fans can make a room feel up to 4°F cooler. Just remember to turn them off when you leave the room–fans cool people, not spaces.

 4. Cook Smart

Avoid heating up your kitchen with the oven. Use a microwave, air fryer, or grill outside when possible. It’s cooler, quicker, and more energy-efficient.

5. Run Appliances at Night

Run dishwashers, laundry machines, and other heat-producing appliances during the cooler evening hours. Some utilities even offer lower rates during off-peak hours.

6. Seal Leaks and Insulate

Make sure cool air isn’t escaping through gaps around doors and windows. Weatherstripping and caulking can help maintain a stable indoor temperature and reduce AC usage.

7. Get an Energy-Efficient AC Unit

If it’s time for an upgrade, choose an ENERGY STAR rated air conditioner. They use up to 15% less energy than standard models.

Bonus Tip: Enroll in Community Solar

Save up to 10% on your electricity bill while supporting local clean energy–no rooftop panels required!

The Bottom Line:

Small adjustments can make a big difference. By using energy wisely this summer, you’ll stay comfortable, save money, and lighten your environmental footprint.
